George Sullivan Update

07/10/2024
Friday 4 October Update:
Last night both St Helier RNLI lifeboats were tasked to a service. Whilst on service, the all-weather lifeboat George Sullivan suffered an unforeseen mechanical issue, which resulted in a small fire in the engine room. The crew responded swiftly and professionally to protect their safety and extinguish the fire. The inshore lifeboat then towed the all-weather lifeboat back into St Helier.

We train for these types of scenarios, although we hope they don’t ever happen, and last night was a perfect example of why our training is so important. Our crews were confronted with a very challenging situation and they responded with incredible professionalism, preventing the situation from escalating. We’re incredibly proud of their response.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and repairs will be scheduled in due course. In the meantime, St Helier RNLI inshore lifeboat remains on service, and all-weather lifeboat cover will be provided by St Peter Port RNLI and Alderney RNLI. A relief lifeboat is being coordinated.

Sunday 6 October Update:
With the George Sullivan out of action we have called on the RNLI’s relief fleet and have this afternoon welcomed our relief Tamar class lifeboat, 16-01 Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson. The plan is that she will be with us whilst George Sullivan is off service.
As this is the same class of lifeboat, no additional training is required for our crew and she has entered service immediately.
